It’s important to know a few on page SEO tips and tricks to help you quickly get started with page optimization.
This is so your website complies with what Google and other search engines are looking for so it becomes easier to be found on their search engine and get search traffic.
There are some basic page optimization aspects that you need to include with your website, many of which you may have never thought about before. earning rudimentary SEO can significantly benefit your site seo.
When doing on page optimizations, I like to make sure I write down what the page had on it before making any changes, that way I can see if the changes increase or decrease the search traffic so I can make sure I’m not undoing a ranking factor I’m unaware of.
Sometimes your page is ranking in the search engine results for something you may not be aware of, by comparing, you can often find out what has changed and make sure you continue to supply high-quality content for the users search intent.
However, if you haven’t done much to your page and it isn’t ranking well, there are a few things we can do to enhance your search engine optimization to drive more organic traffic.

The reason this is important is when you start to target relevant keywords and start to rank higher in the search engine results, you can often lower your pay-per-click advertising and bring organic traffic for related keywords.
When you create high-quality content, add in proper URL structures, increase page speed, and many other things, you will often achieve higher rankings because Google’s algorithm begins to favor your website.
Beyond the title tag that is often hidden in the header of the site. There are a few things that apply to all H-tags. First, let’s talk about what an H-Tag is.
An H-Tag is a snipped of HTML code that surrounds some text on your page, usually headlines, and tells a search engine and users what the page’s content is about. There are multiple h tags from an h1 tag up to an h6 tag.
The h1 tag is the most important and there should only be one but you can have multiple others with the h6 being the least important. There is value in using H-Tags in your content as it does carry ranking weight. These tags usually look something like this, in their most simple form.

Don’t bold your H-tags, because bolding them may actually hurt your rankings. However, you should also ensure that you use these tags. You should never keyword stuff in any scenario, but placing keywords naturally into the tags can be beneficial to your site’s rankings.

Ensure that the page’s title is enticing and will draw interest to the page, makes sense, and is consistent with the high-quality content. The h1 tag describes what the entire page is about. For example, if you were to write an article about baking, the H1 tag might be something like: “The Best Oven Baked Meals in 15-Minutes or Less.”
The H1 Tag is the first signal to Google on what you web page is about. Make sure it’s enticing and if possible, contains one of your targeted keywords.
Unlike H1 tags, pages can have multiple H2 tags. They are often the headlines that break up individual sections of an article.
Using H2 tags can help make your article more readable by allowing users to scan your content quickly, as well as allow your site to rank higher in search engines.
Ideally, these tags will contain a keyword, but only if it makes sense and can be inserted naturally. As mentioned before, you should never keyword stuff. For the baking article, the H2 tags would likely list some great things to bake, such as “meals” or “ingredients.”
H3 tags aren’t quite as vital as H2 tags but implementing them can help your page to rank higher in Google search by adding more relevance to your article.
These tags can be used to break things down further than H2 tags. Consistent with our baking article example, H3 tags would most likely be used to break down each category into more specific categories, like “Chocolate Chip Cookies,” “Snickerdoodle Cookies,” and “Devil’s Food Cake.”
Another example regarding H-tags is present on this very page. The phrase “Basic On Page SEO Tips to Help your Site Rank Higher” is the h1 tag of the blog post. The “H-tags” segment is an H2 tag, along with “Images,” “Interlinking,” “External Links,” “Meta-description,” and “Categories and Tags.” The segments dividing the H-tags section (the H1, H2, and H3 tags) are the H3 tags of the page.
The h4-h6 tags can be used to further nest your content. Often, the h-tags are misused as styling elements to make fonts bolder or darker, but the actual use is for site hierarchy. It is important to use proper CSS and for styling text and not use title tags for that purpose. This adds to your site’s technical SEO which is important to keep clean and optimized.
It is important to use images, videos, graphic design and other multimedia elements to bring attention to the webpage. Consumers are drawn to multimedia, which is why Google uses the presence of multimedia content as a ranking factor.
Additionally, you should ensure that the file name of the image contains relevant keywords for the page. If it has previously been uploaded, you will have to re-upload it with the proper name. Otherwise, upload it with the new file name.
It’s best to make sure your images would be named with relevant keywords similar to what the post is about. For example, you might want to use “photography.jpg” instead of “IMG0006759.jpg” since Google actually will take note of the image names and they can become ranking factors on your web page.
Image sizes play a significant role when it comes to on page seo and technical seo factors. The size of the image directly influences the page speed which is a large ranking factor Google uses to rank your site.
If you have large images that slow downloading time, it can directly affect the user experience which can affect your rankings.
It’s also important to understand that just because you may not notice the page speed, it doesn’t mean Google won’t.
If you have a large photo that needs to be resized, the best option would be to reduce the size before you upload it in a program like Photoshop. However, if you don’t have access to any photo editing software, you can reduce the size before uploading using tinyjpg.com and then resizing the image once in WordPress.
Once again, I suggest reducing the size before upload if possible. The slower the site becomes from large images, the more frustrating the user experience will be which can cause lower rankings from a high bounce rate.
Still talking about image sizes, once uploaded it is also good practice to have an image optimization software like Imagify running. This will further help compress images upon upload and can even resize them if they are over a certain pixel width and can significantly increase your page speed.
I like running this software because it can help reduce the size of previously uncompressed images that were uploaded and sometimes further reduce an image currently uploading without compromising the quality.

An alt tag, also known as an alt attribute, or alt description are HTML code snippets that allow the search engines to understand what the image is about and also increase the user experience for those using screen readers.
Alt tags and alt text, all these terms are interchangeable, but they are the tag that tells Google exactly what your photo is about. Alt text is an incredibly important part of SEO for images.
Describe the images using the alt text in a few descriptive words and include related keywords if possible. This tag is the alt= attribute and can be easily modified in the WordPress Media Library.
Many people have heard about the importance of link building to your website. I’m not going to get into backlinks since that is a bit more in-depth and we want to cover some basics you can do today.
So with that, there are two other forms of link building that can help influence your site rank, too. These methods, in a nutshell, help your site rank your site. Strange phrase, right? That’s because we are using pages within your own website to influence the importance of other pages on your website. This is known as interlinking.
The other type of link we will use to rank your site is known as external links. These are links that reach out to external resources or links that would allow users to leave your site.
Now don’t worry, you’ll find that if you have high-quality content, people won’t leave your site until they have received what they came for in the first place.
The nice thing about external links is you can increase the relevance of the blog post or web page by supplying users links to similar content on other websites.
Interlinking, also known as internal linking, is when you add links between pages of your website to other pages on the same site which allows the reader to follow a link from one article to another article within the website.
For example, if one of your blog posts references one of your products, you’ll want to add an internal link to that product’s page.
If a page suggests that the consumer contact the company, you may want to add an internal link to the company’s contact page.
Ultimately, when using internal linking for a link building strategy, you’ll want to have the most links pointing to the most important pages of your site, because these internal links will cause them to rank higher than other pages of your site.
External links are hyperlinks that point at a different domain that is not your site allowing a user to navigate to an entirely different website.
It’s best to link to a site that contains something supporting the topic you are discussing. Try to avoid linking to competitors’ websites, because that can potentially lose you business.
Make sure that the site you link to is a reputable website. This link creates what is known as a Link Neighborhood. If the site you link to isn’t reputable, Google will assume that your site lives in this “bad neighborhood” and it will negatively impact your rankings. Essentially, your site will be considered to not be reputable by association with the bad site. External links can help with your overall search engine rankings.
The SEO metadata is what the user sees on the Google search results page and includes the page title and meta description of the page which can encourage click through rates.
This provides a way for you to tell users what to expect from your website, as well as what the page contains. If this is left blank, Google will automatically fill it, and their description may be far from accurate or enticing.
It is important to create a meta description that is informative, inviting, and accurate. You should never lie or attempt to mislead consumers with your meta description.
Misleading consumers into clicking on your site will ultimately lead to them clicking away, which will hurt your Google search engine rankings. Additionally, a relevant meta description will help drive your target audience that are searching for your product to your page.
When writing your meta description, try to include your target keyword and possibly some lsi keywords to your meta description.
Categories should be broad and general. You should try to limit the overall number of categories used on your website. Tags should be more specific and you can use as many tags as you like on your page.
For example, an blog post describing proper tooth cleaning to prevent oral health problems should be categorized under “general dentistry” or another broad term. It can then be tagged with terms like “tooth cleaning,” “oral health problems,” “oral health prevention,” and more.
The use of categories and tags is often likened to the makeup of a pizza. The basic crust is the category, like a pan pizza or stuffed crust. Then the many toppings such as cheese and pepperoni and things that make up the pizza are the tags.
These are just a few tips to help you understand some basic SEO principles. SEO can be frustrating. It is time consuming and can be complicated, but it is necessary to help your business.
The higher your site ranks in Google search results, the more organic traffic your website will get and the more likely you will be to your target audience.

I’ve covered site speed in other articles but here we are again because it is so important. Site speed is one of those terms that Google has explicitly said they rank sites based on. There are two main sections that site speed comes down to and each brings its own issues to the table. The two are actual site speed and perceived site speed.
Actual site speed is greatly dependent on the quality of website hosting you use.
I’ve used various hosts for my website designs and each one behaves slightly different from the others. As of this writing, the majority of my websites are currently sitting on Siteground which has been one of my favorite hosts so far and my main website now resides on Kinsta. They have quick servers, helpful staff, and I haven’t had any major issues.
A great website host can be one of the quickest ways to speed up your website if it’s running on any type of budget host.
Simply switching to a host like Siteground or Kinsta can give you a significant boost in site speed. These aren’t the only mid to high-level hosts available. Just research your hosting, check their reviews (especially for support), and make your choice.
Some others to mention are InMotion Hosting, I’ve used them in the past and they performed well and then there is also GoDaddy, though my personal opinion is that they aren’t my favorite when it comes to support, I’ve seen sites perform at various speeds with them. Currently, one of my clients is on their platform and benchmarking very well.
If you are looking for some ultra power when it comes to hosting, though it comes at a significant price difference, you can try WP Engine or Kinsta.
I have a few sites that I’ll be moving to them here in the new future due to search traffic demands and the processing powerhouse that comes with them.
The perceived site speed is an entirely different beast and can be a bit more difficult to fix. Usually, when the perceived site speed is slow, the actual site speed is also slow.
You will also get this with budget hosting since they usually run slower processors and throttle bandwidth. The perceived site speed is when your website is loading and the users will actually notice it loading slow as well.
If you are on an intermediate or higher host and still running slow, check your image sizes and plugins you are running. Often, your images will be too large and your plugins may be out of date or written by someone who is still learning to optimize their code.
If both of those are optimized, you can also add a caching service to help speed up your website.
Cashing will take the pages and images on your website and save them in such a way that they can be delivered to you as quickly as possible and at the smallest file size possible. The daunting task of caching your website has become simplified into a plugin. Each caching plugin may look different, but overall, the functions are similar. Try out various caching plugins to find your favorite.
When it comes to free caching software, I do like Siteground’s SG Optimizer since it is designed to work directly with their servers and works very nicely, adds significant speed boosts, and they keep it updated.
Another free contender is WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, and Comet Cache. I’ve used all three and they all have worked well, though they may not be quite as streamlined and sleek as my favorite caching plugin.
For the majority of my sites I use WP Rocket if SG Cache isn’t running already. WP Rocket has a very clean and organized interface and steps your through the plugin with easy to follow tabs. I notice significant speed boosts on this plugin as well.

Keyword stuffing and meta keywords are a thing of the past and for good reason. They usually reduced the usefulness of a website and where used soley to gain as much traffic from Google as possible. Unfortunately, many websites are still riddled with keyword stuffing. Rather than helping your website rank higher, keyword stuffing has the opposite effect. Google’s algorithms will penalize your site if it detects keyword stuffing. Though it probably won’t deindex a page that has utilized this method, the page definitely won’t rank anymore and unlikely to make it on page one.
Keywords are still extremely useful to optimize your website, but they should only be implemented where they fit naturally. It may be helpful to use keywords for your h-tags and in your page’s title, but only where they make sense. Keyword stuffing is a fairly easy fix; all you have to do is ensure that all of your keywords fit naturally into the flow of the content.
If the content is poorly written or thin, we recommend just deleting the page and creating a new page with highly relevant content with natural keyword integration. Fewer keywords are needed now if the content is relevant and the article can often appear even if the keyword searched for isn’t even on the page.
What is thin content? When we talk about thin content it goes two ways. The most common description of thin content is just to have very few words on a page with very little useful information. The other type of thin content is where there is a sufficient amount of words on the page, but nothing is relevant to what the user is searching for. There is more to content than just fluff.
Content is still an important aspect of SEO, but not any content will cut it. Thin content that has little value won’t improve your website’s Google rankings. Additionally, Google will consider your website to not be as trustworthy if your content is riddled with spelling errors or grammatical mistakes. Content can significantly help your website, but only if it is high-quality content.
Google will also consider the overall length of your content. If your website contains minimal content, Google will assume that it fails to provide in-depth information for consumers. There are times where there are pages with few words yet it is incredibly relevant and useful content. This type of page can still rank, but usually it requires many links and social shares to show that it’s relevant before it will rank.
Personal blog networks are still very common and may still increase your site’s rankings. So why is it in the list of old SEO strategies? That’s because Google is aware of PBN’s and once found, they will often deindex the entire network. This can be from a handful of servers to hundreds, if not thousands of sites. If this happens, your ranking may plummet overnight without hopes to recover quickly.
There can be significant consequences if Google catches you using them. In all honesty, the time and money spent building a personal blog network could be better directed toward finding real backlinks that won’t ever result in penalties for your site. Backlinks do help your site ratings still and probably will for quite some time, but you need to ensure that you only link your website to trustworthy sites.
Linking to sketchy sites will cause Google to associate your site with these “bad” ones and assume that your site is also untrustworthy, this is known as a link neighborhood. Each website is rated with many factors, one which is known as a spam score. You can find your score by using the Moz Link Explorer. The spam score judges all the links coming in and going out from a particular website. If the majority of the sites are low quality and spam, Google passes that danger score over to your website from association.
You will find that many of these PBN’s have fairly high spam scores and low quality content. If you check the site before you link to it and find spun content, thin content, default WordPress themes, and hidden registrations, you’ve likely found a site on a PBN. We recommend you do not link to this website and if you receive a link from it, disavow it.
Since we just covered PBN’s and mentioned often finding spun content on them, let’s get into that a bit. What is spun content? This is content that has been loaded into a program and it selects synonyms to match the word it’s replacing. Now a spun article isn’t necessarily low quality in terms of grammar right away, there are some decent quality spinners out there that can even trick Copyscape.
However, with a PBN, the same article is usually spun hundreds, sometimes thousands of times which ends with articles that make absolutely no sense when you read them . These articles are placed on a PBN with a link back to your website. Since the articles are of no value, the link is either deemed valuable, or your website may actually take a bit of a dip due to being associated.
Though Google frowns upon duplicate content, it’s still very common to see and still very common among helping rank your website. If you plan on using spun content, it’s best to take some time and rewrite the article instead of spin it. By following the format of the existing content, you can put out some good, high-quality content that is unlikely to be deindexed by Google.
However, it’s usually best to find a topic and write original content from the start.
Exact match domains don’t have as much of an impact as they used to. In fact, in many cases, domain names that are designed to match a search query exactly come from untrustworthy, spammy websites. Often these type of exact match domains are specifically going after affiliated purchases and are riddled with low-quality content simply designed to get users there to try to get them to click on an affiliate link.
There is nothing wrong with affiliate websites but it’s important to make sure that the content in them is high quality content that supplies value, answers questions, and helps the users that are searching, and hey, if you happen to get a click on your affiliate link and make a sale, that’s great.

Supply the users with the visual stimulation they need to maintain interest, but not so much that it becomes difficult to find the information you are looking for. Images are a huge factor when it comes to good and bad design. Make sure your images match the company branding and aid in the end goal vs. just being something you happen to enjoy. Not all users share your taste in photography.
A well-designed website will balance beauty and functionality. UI/UX is a term that you may hear from time to time which stands for User Interface, User Experience. In a nutshell, having an easy to navigate site is the user interface which helps guide them through your site and the ease and enjoyment of it is the user experience.
You should really work on testing different forms of navigation, call-to-action locations, content distribution, and interlinking. All these factors play a role in how long the users stay on your website, consume more content, and ultimately, a purchase. How well laid out your page is can quickly allow a user to determine if the page is useful to them or not. Even a few pages with low or useless content can hurt the entire site.
There is a line between creative user interfaces and functional user interfaces. A designer’s job is to narrow that line so you can have a creative interface that is immediately functional to the user. After all, the user is on your website for various reasons, but one reason is not to try to figure out how to navigate your website. Your navigation should be immediately clear and moving in and out of your website pages should be clear and conscise. If a user has to figure out where the navigation bar is on each page, they will quickly become frustrated and leave your website. Clear navigation will let them move between the pages with ease and fulfill their intent as quicly as possible.
A user’s attention span is fairly short and our job as website owners is to supply them the information or products they request as quickly as possible. Often you will see websites with multiple navigation menus. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it’s important to make sure that when you switch to a mobile device that you don’t get multiple hamburger menus that aren’t labeled. Often, when I have multiple menus, my secondary menu will be much shorter and will not toggle to a button when sized to mobile
That way, the menu is very clear that there is only one real selection to make where the multiple choices are, this way your users aren’t confused as to which navigation to choose from and the choice is clear.
Also, be careful with menus that are way too long. I’ve come across many websites that the menu is so long that the flyout or dropdown menus are so long that they actually go off screen. This is not only bad for the user, but it can also causes distrust due to poor quality, and often the code will not work correctly causing even more problems, further reducing the trust of the users. If a menu is going to be incredibly long, try breaking it up into categories to aid in navigation.
The User Interface and User Experience go hand-in-hand. When the interface is easy to navigate, the experience on the website is heightened. The quicker the user can find what they need, how they interact with it, the better experience they will have. Now good navigation doesn’t mean everything has to be laid out in just some form of a list. Users can have interactive boxes that reveal information. There can be expandable sections, animations, and a bunch of other fun and interactive elements that can make the website an enjoyable experience.
However, it’s best not to hide crucial elements such as the navigation as that can negatively affect the user’s experience on the website.
Design goes beyond just the visuals when it comes to websites. With the advancements of coding, you can go as far as modifying how the mouse cursor interacts with the website as well. There are a few times where it makes sense to hijack the user’s scrolling feature but this is usually pretty rare. When a user is used to how their mouse scrolls the page, then suddenly it changes, has elastic scrolling, or smooth scrolling features, though it might look cool, it’s usually not very welcomed by the user. If this feature makes them frustrated, you may lose potential customers.
When it comes to scrolling, it’s usually best to allow the user to keep what they are used to unless there is a very specific feature for this. An example would be a full page scroll at a time. Some sites are set up not to be scrolled, but to be viewed as a slideshow. Though hardly my favorite type of site, they have their place and the experience may not be achieved if the scrolling isn’t hijacked. Don’t just go with what you think looks cool or seems fun to you, think of your audience. Will it enhance or diminish their experience on your website by adding a feature such as this?
The speed of your website can have a direct effect on how well your business is doing online. It’s important to have a website load as fast as possible. Under 3 seconds is best, but each second increases your bounce rates. There are plenty of studies available online that show how site speed relates to user retention. On top of that, even Google has come out and said that website speed is a direct and large ranking factor. There are many ways to speed up your website, some are very easy, some take a little bit of technical skill to accomplish. Here are a few things you can do to speed up your website.
There are plenty of CDN’s available and many of them even have a free service available. My personal favorite is Cloudflare. This is one of the more advanced technical factors of speeding up a website, but even if you have basic knowledge, it’s pretty easy. Though do be aware that if issues arise, the solutions aren’t straightforward and your website can drop and you will probably need a developer to fix them.
However, if the step-by-step process Cloudflare offers goes without a hitch, and usually, it does. It will walk you through each step and at the end request that you update your nameservers. Once those are updated, your CDN becomes active shortly later and your site immediately will speed up, usually be a very noticeable amount. The more you understand about your CDN, the faster your website can become.
A good caching plugin is also very helpful for your website. If you run your website on Siteground like we have many of our sites on, they offer a free caching plugin called SG Cache that’s actually pretty great. However, most of our website we will be running our favorite caching software called WP Rocket. If you prefer another free caching plugin, we also like WP Supercache, W3 Total Cache, and a few others. Try a few and decide for yourself, just make sure you only run one caching program at a time.
As we mentioned above, images are a huge part of your website which makes sense that they show up once again when we are talking about site speed. Having properly sized and compressed images are crucial when it comes to a fast loading website. When you save your images, before you upload them, it’s important to make sure you’ve saved them as small as possible. Photoshop’s Save For Web feature is great for this. You can even further compress them by uploading them to tinyjpg.com and redownloading them before putting them on your website.
We know a lot of people don’t have access to Photoshop, or if they do, they don’t know how to use it. No worries, once you’ve saved your file and uploaded it, run a compression plugin to help you reduce your file sizes. I prefer Imagify for my compression software but ShortPixel, WP Smush, and many others are also available. Once installed, they will start compressing the images as you upload them.
If you’ve already uploaded your images and they are too large, install the plugin and they have a “bulk optimize” feature in them. Simply click on that to optimize all of the images already uploaded to your site. By doing this, you will see another boost in your site speed.
A website speed section cannot be complete without talking about the website host. Though this is sometimes another one of those sections that take some technical knowlege. This is also one of the largest factors taken into account when we talk about website speed. You may have been tempted to sign up for a budget host when you started your website but you will find that even though these hosts are often inexpensive, you outgrow them quickly by needing either more space or a faster website.
As mentioned above, we love Siteground, that’s an affiliate link by the way, but even with that said, they are hands down our favorite host. Not only are our websites fast, but reliable too, but sometimes even that isn’t enough for your needs. Another comparable host in terms of speed is BlueHost. However, if you are running a massive site with tons of traffic, I mean tons! and you cannot manage your site security yourself, you might want to look into a very power managed host like WP Engine, however, a host like that comes with a cost. They are often more powerful than most websites need, but they are worth looking into if you are having trouble getting your website running fast enough.
As I said, moving a website does require technical understanding. The plus side is, both of these hosts offer a migration service and they will move one website for free for you, most of the time. Talk with them first and find out which is best for you.

Negative SEO attacks used to have more of an effect on websites a couple of years ago than they do today. One method of this would be a competitor sending massive amounts of low-quality links to your website. This is usually done from low-quality PBN (Personal Blog Networks) with poorly spun content, then linking improper keywords and sending them to your site. It’s a very immoral practice but many people still do it, even today.
It’s easy to overcome a negative SEO attack these days and that’s if it even affects your site, but if you are ranking low, it’s worth looking in to. Use some backlink monitoring software such as aHrefs to find all the bad links coming into your website, disavow them in that program and export the list to a text file and just upload that to Google Search Console in the disavow links section. As simple as that is, make sure this file is set up properly so you don’t disavow important links.
Luckily, Google is already aware of these tactics and if they see a massive influx of poor quality links coming to your site, often, they just ignore all the links anyway. However, Google runs algorithms and sometimes some of these attacks can get by them. Finding and disavowing the links is a quick and easy method to remove all value from those incoming links.
Though negative SEO attacks usually don’t affect you, there are other types of attacks that can break your site functionality. Keep an eye out for those and take care of them if or when they arrive to keep your site beautiful and running properly.

If you currently utilize an exit modal, it might be worth A/B testing this to see if your rankings and on-page interactions improve if it is removed.

It is important to have a realistic budget in mind when you are ready to enter into a logo design project. First off, it is very rude to ask a designer to work on a logo for free. It is just bad all around. More than likely you won't work for free in your job, don't ask them to work for free in theirs. I don't mean to be blunt, but we get asked that a lot.
Do you have a budget already set, simply ask the designer if he can work within those means? If you don't have a budget and you are asking the designer to bid a project, that is fine too. If the cost happens to come back higher than you are expecting don't throw in the towel just yet. Ask the designer if there is any way to possibly lower the costs since it is outside of your budget. Sometimes the designer can lower the revisions they usually supply or perhaps you will be getting multiple concepts and they can reduce that amount. That is just an example.
Understand that the designer will have a lot of work behind the scenes that you won't even see. This could be hours of concept thumbnails, creating mood boards, competitor research, and then the hours it takes to fine tune every line in the final design. We care about our craft immensely.
It's important not to ask for clip art to be incorporated into your logo. Not only is this offensive to the artist, but if you want a clip art logo, just go buy a clip art logo.
Most graphic designers will work on contracts. Though this might seem a bit intimidating, it's to protect them and their work but it's also to protect you and what you are agreeing to purchase. All of your rights are in this contract so if you are receiving full rights to the design, it will be in there. If you are only buying limited rights, it too will be in there. Look over the contract carefully to make sure you are happy with the terms, if you have change requests just ask, this contact is as much for you as it is for them. Contracts are a good thing.
So you've agreed on a price, talked about the design, and signed the contract. Now what? First, it's common practice for the designer to ask for half the payment up front. They will send you an invoice for a specified amount and they won't start your design until the half down has been received. Now you've paid the design process begins.
During this process, there will be many hours of work that you won't even see. This is going to be thumbnails (coming up with the strongest design in a series of many, many sketches), mood boards to get a feel of the mood of the logo, preliminary comps which are better-rendered sketches, and then the vectoring process. Though most artists don't show thumbnails because they don't make much sense to someone who doesn't work with them on a daily basis, most designers will supply them if you ask for them. Just don't get too set on a design because it's best to leave the strongest logo do the designer. You hired them as the professional after all. They have an eye trained to recognize the stronger shapes and physiology behind the design.
The designer will present you with your logo design. After all the work is done, the designer has selected the strongest logo design out of the tons of thumbnails, they have meticulously edited it to perfection, and now they are presenting it to you. This does not mean you don't get a say in your logo design.
It is common to have revisions in the design process. Perhaps you don't like the shape of a particular letter, or you aren't sure about the chosen color, etc. Just talk to your designer and they will usually tell you why they made a particular decision but if an edit strengthens the logo, we are happy to make it. If we don't agree with your decision, we will often advise against it and explain why and see if you still want to progress after our reasoning.
The design process is a long process that requires the outcome to look simple and memorable. However, the process is anything but simple.
Now you have the final logo is done, the designer will request the final payment and once made they will send you over the final designs. Depending on your contract, it will specify what you get to use the logo for. If you have full or limited rights, and so on. Most contracts don't allow you to change the logo after it's complete so no stretching or recoloring the logo. Branding matters!
